Your credit score affects whether you can get a loan, a credit card or even an apartment, and on what terms. The good news: it is built by everyday habits, not by luck. This guide explains the basics and seven habits you can start now, based on the approach taught by Maximiliano Nicolás, attorney, U.S. military veteran and bestselling author.
What is a credit score?
A credit score is a number that lenders use to estimate how likely you are to repay what you borrow. The exact model depends on your country and the credit bureau, but most scores look at the same things: whether you pay on time, how much of your available credit you use, how long you have had credit, and how often you apply for new credit.
7 habits that help you build better credit
1. Pay every bill on time
Payment history is usually the most important factor. Set up automatic minimum payments or calendar reminders so you never miss a due date.
2. Keep your balances low
Using only a small part of your credit limit shows lenders that you are not overextended. If you can, pay your card balance in full each month.
3. Check your credit report regularly
Request your credit report from the official sources in your country and review it for errors, such as accounts you do not recognize or payments marked late by mistake. Dispute anything that is wrong.
4. Do not open many new accounts at once
Each application can be recorded on your report. Apply for new credit only when you need it.
5. Keep older accounts open when it makes sense
A longer credit history usually helps. If an old card has no annual fee, keeping it open and in good standing can support your score.
6. Have a plan for your existing debt
Paying down balances step by step improves both your finances and your credit. Our guide How to Get Out of Debt: A 5-Step Plan shows you how to start.
7. Build an emergency fund
Savings keep an unexpected expense from turning into new debt or a missed payment. See How to Build an Emergency Fund on Any Income.
